  • Neville Chamberlain, Catholic Bishops and Obama.

    By Randall A. Terry

“Jesus answered, Thou couldst have no power against me; except it were given thee from above: therefore he that delivered me to thee hath the greater sin.” John, 19:11

With these words, Christ condemned his betrayers more harshly than he condemned Pilate - the very one who sentenced him to die. Whether Christ is referring to Judas or Caiaphas, the point is the same: greater sin was committed…greater guilt was borne…by the one who delivered Him into the hands of the man who ordered his death. In Christ’s judgment, the betrayer was a greater villain than the executioner.

Most people have come to hate the name and memory of Adolf Hitler, as they should. But most people do not hate – much less even know – the name and memory of British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain. But in many ways, Neville Chamberlain was arguably more to blame for WWII – and the loss of some thirty million lives – than was Adolf Hitler.

It was Neville Chamberlain who delivered Austria into Hitler’s hands, which led to the immediate rape and murder of 70,000 Austrians, the loss of liberty of an entire nation, and the seizure and absorption of Austrian manufacturing and arms into the German war machine.

It was Chamberlain who appeased Hitler, betrayed Czechoslovakia at Munich, and then delivered millions of innocent Czechs into the hands of their Nazi torturers and murderers. He had read the Nazi communiqués which promised the Gestapo would shoot or imprison any Czechs who remained in the Sudetenland after the Nazis seized control, yet he delivered them up.

It was Neville Chamberlain who had the authority, the duty, and the power to stop Hitler in 1937 and 1938, which would have saved the world from the most horrifying slaughter of innocents that most of us remember.

Yes, Hitler “pulled the trigger.” But it was Neville Chamberlain who delivered up the victims. And once war was made in earnest on Poland – which plunged all of Europe into hell – Chamberlain could only feign surprise; he was driven from office in disgrace, and replaced by Winston Churchill.

Why did Chamberlain deliver up the innocent to perish? The record he left is clear: it was all about money. Chamberlain did not want to disrupt British commerce, British manufacturing, and British trade. Prior to WWII, England’s number one trading partner was Germany. The number one export to Germany was scrap metal. The Germans stamped it “return to sender” and sent it back to England in the form of Stuka bombers, V-2 rockets, U-Boats, and other munitions.

In short, Neville Chamberlain was Europe’s Judas. Judas betrayed Christ for 30 pieces of silver; Chamberlain betrayed Austria, Czechoslovakia, and the entire Continent, for the sake of British commerce.

Which brings us to most American Catholic Bishops.

They – like Chamberlain – had the data of what Obama intended to do if he became President. They – like Chamberlain – had the authority, the duty, and the power to stop Obama from getting elected. Before and since his election, a handful of bishops have spoken out with courageous clarity. Bishop Jenky from Rockford Illinois made waves by his obtuse comparison of Obama and Hitler; but more importantly, he has made it clear that he will defy Obama, and refuse to comply with the HHS regulations. But the valor of bishop Jenky only serves to highlight the silence of most American bishops.

Why have these bishops “delivered up” the American Catholic Church to Obama? Why did they look askance at his ethical atrocities until now? Why did many bishops actually vote for Obama?

Money. Like Neville Chamberlain – (and yes, like Judas) – it is about money. The Catholic Church in America receives billions of dollars from the federal government for her various hospitals and charities. And when the prospect of Obama’s election was yet on the horizon, like Chamberlain before them, they ignored the less than pleasant facts. They ignored the communiqués. They ignored Obama’s record. They knew that their number one “trading partner” was the federal government, and a Democratic President meant the potential for more revenue. They sold their scrap metal to Obama; he stamped it “return to sender.”

As we watch President Obama order the political crucifixion of the Catholic Church, let us remember that it was the Catholic bishops who delivered Her up; and as Christ said, they have the greater guilt.
