Over the past couple weeks, I have been closely following the unfortunate situation at Georgetown University. Perhaps you’ve heard that they invited none other than the Head of the Department of Health and Human Services, Kathleen Sebelius, to speak at their commencement/award ceremonies, Friday May 18.
This egregious act on the part of Georgetown, with president John DeGioia at the helm, flies in the face of the authority of the United States Catholic Bishops; it is an act which undermines Religious Liberty in our land, and helps ensure that Catholics be forced to pay for the murder of innocent unborn babies.
Georgetown University falls under the authority of Donald Cardinal Wuerl, Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Washington DC. We who work with The Society for Truth & Justice, led by Randall Terry, have spoken clearly to Cardinal Wuerl regarding this outrage.
As a part of our “dialogue” with the Archdiocese, I communicated with several offices at the Archdiocesan level; I faxed a letter to His Eminence; I sent numerous “soft” copies of our letter, and spoke with numerous staff at the Archdiocese, including in Wuerl’s office. They confirmed to me that our letter was received. Our letter, and my phone calls, each had one goal: to urge His Eminence to act boldly, by issuing a Statement (from him) in which he directly rebuke Georgetown, and demand that Sebelius be disinvited.
Now, it seems, Cardinal Wuerl has made his move. He has ordered that the “Archdiocese” issue a statement...without his name attached. And I’ve got a problem with that. A big problem.

An article by pro-life reporter, Kathleen Gilbert, LifeSiteNews.com, stands as a fine example of the subterfuge that Cardinal Wuerl has just effected. The title of the article:
Archdiocese slams Georgetown U. invitation of Obama HHS secretary Sebelius.
(
http://www.lifesitenews.com/news/arc...etary-sebelius ) In this article, Gilbert speaks glowingly of the Archdiocesan “unsigned editorial,” which supposedly “slams” Georgetown for having invited Sebelius to speak at the commencement ceremonies this Friday.
How does a nameless “unsigned” editorial make waves, rock the boat, or
slam an institution? At most, it's a slap on the wrist. In contrast, when Wuerl first addressed the HHS controversy, he issued a public statement,
with his signature twice in two weeks, January 30, and February 13, 2012. His failure to speak with the same authority at this moment tells Georgetown that their outrage is, while "disappointing" (as the Archdiocesan editorial calls it), nevertheless its not worth actually rebuking Georgetown, and disinviting Sebelius.
The mere title of Gilbert’s article is proof of the power of Cardinal Wuerl’s spin team to fool pro-lifers into believing that he has, as she writes, “weighed in…in clear terms…” and Gilbert passes on the hypnotic spin to the prolife world.
Prolifers, with the help of LifeSiteNews, are being misled into believing that Cardinal Wuerl has stood up courageously for the cause of religious freedom and the lives of the unborn. Now, prolifers will feel like they have discharged their duty to God by having signed a pansy cyber-petition. Never mind that Georgetown will remain unmoved in its scandalous behavior.
This was a cowardly move on the part of Cardinal Wuerl. It is an "unsigned editorial," as the article reads. Wuerl is clearly unwilling to put his reputation on the line in rebuking Georgetown. He is unwilling to come out directly and issue a statement from his own pen, bearing his authoritative signature. He has "found a way" to avoid controversy.
Congratulations, Your Eminence, you have (again) found a way to remain aloof and silent in the face of injustice and grave sin. No worries, your editorial will not 'make any waves,' or, 'rock the boat.' And so, most importantly, you can continue to enjoy the appearance of courage that will placate the multitudes of pro-lifers out there. Your reputation will remain “spotless” to well-meaning prolifers…that is, unless you ask one of the unborn babies who is soon to be scheduled to die, under Sebelius’ dictates.
Cardinal Wuerl has given Georgetown an easy out, and he has convinced prolifers all across America that the Georgetown/Sebelius outrage is being met with the full weight of his authority.
I, for one, do not buy it. Would that LifeSiteNews, and the prolife world had not been hoodwinked into SILENCE.
But, no big deal. It's only our own Religious Liberty and the lives of the unborn that are at issue.
...God help us.
P.S. Please come and meet us at Georgetown this Friday, to protest. Details on Home page.
